Initiating Conversation

I noticed from the search terms that people have been using to find this site that a lot of people have a tough time initiating conversation so I figured I'd just touch on it.

Starting conversation shouldn't be difficult. It's all about timing and figuring out what to talk about. If you're in an environment where you can hear someone talking, simply wait for your cue to enter the conversation. I usually wait and once I see my opportunity, I use humour. I'll give you an example:

Today as I was leaving the gym, there was a young lady at the front desk buying a bottle of water. She was paying by Interac. The person behind the counter was pulling on the cord (I think she was trying to untangle it) while she was typing in her account info. The lady behind the counter appologized and the girl whom had finished paying replied "Yeah, I was wondering what you were doing..." This is where I saw my opportunity to jump into the conversation. I simply said "She was trying to steal your PIN number." That was good enough to start a conversation. I ended up chatting with this young lady for 10 minutes or so before I had to leave. For the record, she was extremely attractive. Not that I'm a bad looking man or anything, but I'm self-aware and she was much better looking than me.

It's very easy to start a conversation provided you can figure out when to jump in. It's also important to remember that nobody is out of your league. I go with being funny because that's what I know. I approach it with confidence and am not the least bit timid. No matter what approach you take, confidence is key. Why be nervous anyways? The worst that's going to happen is that the person won't want to talk to you. Their loss.

If you don't have that natural sense of timing, things you want to look for are silences amongst the group of people where the person you want to chat with is in, rhetorical questions (excellent spot to jump in with a joke... A good joke, though), if you witness someone try a pathetic pick-up attempt, laugh with them, make a comment, etc. Basically you don't want to appear like you're trying to pick them up. You just want to talk. Whatever happens from there happens.
